Newington precinct - improving safety and managing traffic

Council is developing a local area traffic management plan (LATM) to manage traffic and improve walking and cycling in the Newington precinct. This area is bounded by Livingstone Road, New Canterbury Road, Stanmore Road and Enmore Road.

The aim of the LATM is to:

  • increase road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
  • calm traffic and improve access for pedestrians and people riding bikes; and
  • manage changing traffic needs over the next ten years

In April/May 2018 we gathered local knowledge of driving, walking, cycling in the neighbourhood via a survey on this page.
Read the outcomes of the survey and other data gathered about traffic and safety in the precinct here.
The survey outcomes start on p.26 and are also contained in Appendic C.

Outcome of research to date and next steps

Council has considered the outcomes of the survey, traffic and accident data and other research. It is proposing to introduce a 40km/h limit for the Newington precinct to significantly improve road safety for all in the area.
Council would also install speed humps on the streets highlighted in yellow on this map to meet Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) requirements.

What happens next?

Information gathered from the feedback sessions, along with community comments and Council’s own research data will be used to develop a draft Local Area Traffic Management Plan for the Newington precinct. The draft plan is expected to be placed on public exhibition in November 2018 for final feedback before it is considered by Council. Once the plan is adopted, Council will create a schedule to implement the plan over time as funding becomes available.
